Grant Program: The Children and Families First Act enacted in January 1999, requires that the Commission's strategic plan for early childhood development in Lassen County address three distinct areas: 1) Improved Child Health: Healthy Children; 2) Improved Family Functions: Strong Families; and 3) Improved Child Development: Children Learning and Ready for School. The emphasis is on comprehensive, integrated planning and service delivery in achieving these overarching improvements for children prenatal to age 5. The strategic plan adopted by the Commission has the following key goals:
- To improve the overall health of children aged prenatal to 5 years, with an initial focus on dental health.
- To empower individuals and organizations to make positive differences in their own communities
- To educate parents on issues related to early childhood development and available children and family services and programs
- To facilitate public and private partnerships to integrate and augment childcare and early childhood development services
Funds are derived from a tax on tobacco products and are allocated to counties based upon the number of live births in each county. It is anticipated that Lassen County will receive approximately $211,000 per year. A portion of funds received each year will be allocated to a grant program.
